Hey HipCats!
You’re probably unfamiliar with the history of HipCat Society. (Spoiler alert: This ain’t my first business venture!)
It didn’t happen overnight. We’ve spent years trying to nail down our core values and mission statement.
We kept asking ourselves:
- What’s our why?
- What are the values we aspire to live by every day?
- Why does HipCat exist?
- Who do we serve?
Then, one day: BAM! It came to us.
How, you ask?
In this blog post, I’m going to share that very story.
But, it’s not going to be about us. I’m going to share:
- Why you, as a fellow entrepreneur, MUST have a mission statement and core values
- HipCat’s Story
- Our mission statement and core values
- Two free worksheets to help you create your core values and mission statement
Ready? Let’s get started!
Why you need a mission statement and core values
What’s a mission statement? Your mission statement is a brief description of why your organization exists and the purpose it serves. A successful mission statement does not focus on WHAT you do or HOW you do it, but rather WHY.
What’re core values? Your core values are the guiding principles that influence and drive every area of your organization. They’ll help you stay on track with your business goals and serve your customers.
Having a solid mission statement and core values create your business’s purpose.
- It’ll influence every business decision you make.
- It’s what you value in your business.
- It’s the why you get up every single morning to kick butt and share your genius to the world.
HipCat Society’s journey to a purposeful mission
HipCat Society has a mission statement and core values (I’ll get to that later).
But, it didn’t happen overnight. It took some serious thinking.
Shoot: It took a global pandemic to figure it out.
Before HipCat became a thought, I started a niche marketing agency … Opens in a new window to Roadside Dental Marketing… with my husband in 1999 (before Google was even considered a verb!).
I was raising two little ones while trying to get this business off the ground.
I learned quickly that marketing and building websites require adapting to the online world constantly. This includes when Google made huge changes to give small businesses a chance to compete online in 2012.
They demanded “real company stuff” over keyword stuffing. It became a popularity contest.
It could’ve been easy to stay in the past and veg out. But that’s not how I think.
I wanted to give our clients a chance to win this popularity contest and let their businesses thrive.
We created trendy tools and resources to train our clients on how to market themselves to the digital world and their communities.
We became scary good at it. So good that we decided to test them out on small businesses.
I have many friends and families who were starting their new businesses. They came to us asking for advice on how to market themselves, DIY style.
When I gave them these tools, their growth was incredible.
It became clear small businesses and entrepreneurs don’t have the support or budget to market their businesses.
So we thought: What if we created a marketing hub filled with tools, education, and ROI metrics – all at an affordable price?
This became our mission.
It became our passion to take big picture marketing plans and shrink it down to bite-sized pieces.
The roadmaps, surveys, educational tools, etc. we created for our niche clients could easily translate to small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Now, you’re probably thinking:
Shannon! You crazy lady! Why would you want to take on a whole new business when you already have a successful one?
Because I don’t like to sleep. I kid ?
But seriously:
Remember the two children I mentioned back in 1999 we were raising?
Well, I added two more little nuggets, but my two oldest (Dominique and Alexxa) have been a part of this journey with me from the beginning.
They’ve been with me through all the ups and downs of running a small business, and they put the idea in my head to start this new venture to help other small businesses have affordable, ROI-focused marketing.
Marketing that actually works!
With their millennial brilliance, we’ve brainstormed how to create HipCat to make marketing easy and affordable.
This was in 2016. During those four years, we tried to figure out our business’s foundation.
Life happened and it was difficult to hone it all in.
Then, COVID-19 happened.
With the world going into absolute chaos and millions of businesses struggling to survive, it was time to kick our butts into gear.
As Mark Cuban puts it, it’s the small businesses and entrepreneurs who’ll save us and our economy. The world needs you right now, and we want you to succeed.
With this thinking in mind, we had to dig deep into our core values and mission statement.
Our vision of HipCat feeds into gratitude and a personal growth mindset – thanks to the inspiration of Dr. Joe Dispenza and other mindset industry leaders.
Helping you kick ass, grow your business, and love your life – this is what inspires us daily.
